Sounds of the Universe - 2

⊆ April 17th, 2009 by admin | ˜ No Comments »

Quick update on this: I do like the instrumental intro, the song Perfect and the song Currupt.  Even though I feel its a step backwards I do think SOTU will be popular and the tour will probably sell out.  Fans will most likely be attracted to the heavy and extensive synth usage in this album, granted DM has always been synth heavy they have also brought in a great number of more realistic instruments (Guitar, Flute, Oboe, Trumpet, Strings, Orchestra etc.) but this one is almost totally synth driven all the way down to the drums.  The sounds almost drives parallels to more of an Erasure sound, at least as far as the orchestration - Clearly the vocals follow in traditional DM fashion.  I do yet again feel that the ballad songs where Martin sings lead is weak.   Otherwise I have to say, give it a couple of tries before you pass judgement on it.

Depeche Mode - Sounds of the Universe

Sounds of the What?
AT first hearing that a new Depeche Mode album was on its way to production I managed go myself so excited that I seriously threw myself into rather unpleasant migraine. A Migraine brought on by the upcoming excitement of hearing something by my favorite musicians. Now here a few weeks after the initial shock has settled in I am finally hearing the record in full. This weekend I spent reviewing Depeche Modes Newest release (Sounds of the Universe). Well, to put things lightly the new dépêche mode album that had built me up so much that my heads were in the clouds but tThen as I began listening the to album my anticipation faded quickly. Generally in every new release I can find something that I find interesting or unusual that helps me latch onto one or two songs.  This album however I can safely say has no redeeming value of any kind.  The new album is nothing but buzzing noises, repetitive rhythms and David Gahan trying to sound like a raspy blues singer - which no matter how much he wants to will never achieve any notoriety as such. Now I have tolerated DM’d many stylistic changes over the years but this new albums is simply the worst chunk of noise I have stumbled across. Nothing stands out in any way and helps sell the music. In the past DM has been good at including an some unusual bass riff or drum beat or sample that helps set the song or the entire album apart from other artists. This time round it’s hard to tell where one song ends and where the next begins. All in all I feel like that cutting edge that helped put DM on the map has completely vanished. David’s voice for all intents and purposes still sounds a good as ever as does Martins. But as I said before they aren’t singing about anything interesting. I think they would be better served to look back at some of their more successful releases or better yet look at music their competitors are releasing and maybe rethink their goals as musician. If this is the direction the band feels will define the future of Depeche Mode then it might be time for them to move on to others projects. Do understand that I have always been and will be one of Depeche Modes biggest fans and as such I feel they should be pioneers of the best music to come, this album unfortunately isn’t it. Right now I would put my money on new releases of Coldplay Duran Duran, Conjure One, Delirium, Imogene Heap and all American Rejects. Oh Well, sometimes your favorite band just isn’t destined to stay that way forever.
